Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (pdf) – George is an associate history professor in a New Carthage university. The president of the university is his father-in-law, which his wife Martha never lets him forget. The middle-aged couple have a difficult relationship marked by the all to common verbal battle, usually fueled by alcohol, which underlines what appears to be an emotional dependence upon each other.
Late one Saturday evening after a faculty party, Martha invites Nick and Honey, the new biology professor and his mousy wife, over for a drink. As the alcohol flows, Nick and Honey get caught up in George and Martha’s games of needing to hurt each other and everyone around them. The ultimate abuse comes in the form of talk of George and Martha’s unseen sixteen-year-old son, whose birthday is the following day.
