Written by Toni Morrison and first published in 1970, “The Bluest Eye” (pdf) follows the life of a young African-American girl, Pecola, growing up at the end of the Great Depression.
The story follows Pecola’s struggles with her drunk father and a mother who always seems distant. Pecola believes that if she had blue eyes her life would be transformed and everyone would love her. Meanwhile, life continuously seems to confirm her belief that she is ugly and unwanted, as her friends and family make fun of her.
This is a story of racial oppression violence against women. It can be raw in its language. It also contains graphic descriptions and sexually explicit material.
